Maitake Beta Glucan

Maitake Beta-Glucan Extract w/Shiitake, Reishi & Agaricus

Maitake, Shiitake, Reishi and Agaricus are medicinal mushrooms. They contain beta-glucan, which may enhance immune activity against Infections, Viruses, Fevers, Colds, the FLU and Cancer, as well as reduce allergies (where there is inappropriate immune system activity).

Today's savvy consumers are searching for natural and organic immune support. Proven effectiveness is especially important in the area of immune support because it is often difficult to "feel" the effects of immune enhancing products, which are used primarily for prevention.

Researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Research Hospital found that Maitake enhanced several indicators of healthy immune function in a multi-phase, U.S. Government funded human clinical trial. Research at the University of Louisville has also shown that Maitake (Grifola frondosa) provides a high level of immune support, particularly in the body's first line of immune defense, phagocytosis. These studies have been published in peer reviewed journals.

Consumers recognize that enhancing and maintaining a healthy immune system is vital for achieving optimum health. The daily challenges of modern living can significantly weaken the immune system and increase the likelihood of illness. These challenges include stress, environmental toxins, increased exposure to viruses and bacteria, poor nutrition, smoking, dieting, and being in close proximity to others (such as in classrooms and airplanes). As a result, immune support is no longer a seasonal concern but is, instead, a vital necessity throughout the year.

Maitake (Grifola frondosa) is an adaptogenic "host defense potentiator", activating and enhancing the actions of macrophages and other immune cells, all of which are vital to a strong and balanced immune system. Maitake is also recognized as an important cellular protection enhancer.

Regeneration USA's Maitake Beta-Glucan Extract with Shiitake & Reishi utilizes only the most potent and natural ingredients for year round protection, including: Certified Organic Maitake (Grifola frondosa) Mycelia Whole Powder, Maitake (Grifola frondosa) Fruit Body Extract, Organic Reishi Mushroom Powder (Ganoderma lucidum), Organic Shiitake Mushroom Powder (Lentinula edodes) & Organic Agaricus Mushroom Powder (Agaricus blazei).

Maitake Studies

Maitake is an edible mushroom consumed widely in Asia as food and used in traditional medicine to treat diabetes and hypertension. Maitake extracts are commercially available as dietary supplements marketed to “enhance immune function” and to treat HIV and cancer. Beta 1,6-glucan, a protein bound polysaccharide, has been identified as the active constituent. Maitake extracts exhibited hypoglycemic effects in a few studies (9) (12). Preliminary data suggest that maitake may be useful in inducing ovulation in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (22).

Maitake demonstrated antitumor effects (16), enhanced bone marrow colony formation, reduced doxorubicin toxicity (11), and inhibited tumor metastasis in vitro (13). In a study done in mice, oral maitake extract promoted maturation of hematopoietic cells to functionally active myeloid cells and enhanced peripheral blood leukocyte recovery following chemotoxic bone marrow injury (17). A novel polysaccharide, MZF, was shown to induce dendritic cell maturation and enhanced antitumor response (20). Maitake also enhanced interferon activity against bladder cancer cells (18) and alleviated inflammation associated with inflammatory bowel disease (19). In a small non-controlled study, tumor regression or significant improvements in symptoms were observed in half of the subjects using Maitake extract (5). In a study of postmenopausal breast cancer patients, oral administration of maitake extract was shown to have immunomodulatory effects (14). Oral maitake also enhances neutrophil and monocyte function in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (25). More studies are underway to establish maitake’s anticancer potential.
